Model EOC

June 17 - June 21

This is a pilot program which aims to introduce current (2023-24 year) high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to the workings of the Sonoma County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the field of Emergency Management. The program is one week, June 17-21 and will be held at the County EOC in Santa Rosa. Some schools may give Senior Project credit for this program (Students need to check with their school).

The first four days of learning will include how the different EOC roles (Planning, Operations, Logistics, Public Information, Finance, and Management) function, how emergency preparedness can help decrease effects of disasters, and what happens in a disaster at the EOC. On the final day (Friday) students will participate in an exercise where they take on EOC roles and work through a disaster scenario. Professionals from different areas are the instructors for each section so students will learn about the EOC and begin to develop a network.

Our objective is to give students an opportunity to learn how our EOC operates, how priorities are developed in a disaster, how all the partners and first responders coordinate, all about preparedness, and what types of opportunities there are in emergency management for people entering the profession. This immersive exposure to the EOC will allow students to understand the intricacies of disaster events, as well as learn about the different ways people are working to keep the community safe in a disaster. There is no cost to the students.

Our application is online for students to download or can google form is also available https://forms.gle/XkBZ3qxjSRQA1DTd8 . We can take 42 students and will also set five alternates should someone need to drop out. Application are evaluated on first come first serve basis until cohort is full.
