On March 24, 2020, the Board of Supervisors took steps to approve the Defense Against Eviction Decree COVID-19, effective immediately and for the duration of the declared local emergency in Sonoma County.

This decree establishes a legal defense for tenants living anywhere in Sonoma County who are being evicted for non-payment of rent and who can demonstrate financial loss due to loss of job or health expenses resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

The decree requires tenants using this defense to share the information with their landlord to support claims of any possible mortgage assistance.

The decree will remain in effect for 60 days after the end of the emergency. Difficult tenants will not be exempt from paying rent, but landlords must cooperate with tenants in a rent payment program that will allow tenants to remain in the home during this emergency.
