This program recently received the International Association of Emergency Managers’ Preparedness-USA Award, recognizing its innovative approach to educating the next generation of emergency management professionals.
This year, the program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors and will provide 30 students the opportunity to spend one week in late June (June 16–20) at the Sonoma County EOC, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in emergency management. The program is held at the Sonoma County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Santa Rosa County Center.
The week includes three days of in-depth learning about the critical roles within the EOC: Planning, Operations, Logistics, Public Information, Finance, and Management. Students will also explore how effective emergency preparedness can reduce disaster impacts. On Thursday the students will enjoy a field trip to first responder and community response operations. This includes Henry 1 Airbase, Cal Fire Airbase, and Sonoma County Veterans Hall and Fairgrounds. On the fifth and final day, participants will step into EOC roles and tackle a simulated disaster scenario, applying their new knowledge in a realistic, fast-paced setting.
Our goal is to help students:
Lunch is included each day, and there is no cost to attend. If a student has challenges with transportation we can also assist with this at no charge.
This opportunity is open to Sonoma County students currently sophomores, juniors, or seniors (2024-25). Students thinking of Public Safety or Medical careers will find this particularly interesting.
